Visa options for Parents

You may be eligible for a visa in the parent category if your child is an Australian citizen, a permanent resident of Australia, or an eligible New Zealand citizen. Also, your child should be living in Australia for at least 2 years, you should have a sponsor, and meet the ‘balance of family’ test criteria, health and character requirements.

How Long can You Stay in Australia on a Parent Category Visa?

A parent category visa allows up to 2 years as a temporary or permanent resident in Australia.

It is Necessary to Have a Sponsor?

To be eligible for a parent category visa, you will need to have a sponsor who is a citizen of Australia, a permanent resident of Australia or someone who is eligible for the citizenship of New Zealand; is 18 years of age or older; and has been living in Australia since at least two years before the visa application is submitted.

The Balance of Family Test

All applicants for a parent category visa must meet the requirements of the balance of family test. It is specifically designed to determine the extent of your links to Australia. In order to pass this test, at least half of the total number of  your children must live in Australia permanently, or more of your children must live in Australia permanently than children in another country.

Which Visa Option is Right for You?

Parent category visa options vary depending on whether you are applying from in or outside of Australia.

Applying from Outside of Australia

Scenario 1: You are applying from outside of Australia, have a child living in Australia and want to become a permanent resident of Australia.

Visa that suits you: Parent Visa (subclass 103)

To apply for visa, a parent must meet the balance of family test, health and character requirements, and have a sponsor.

Scenario 2: You are applying from outside of Australia, have a child who lives in Australia, want to live in Australia for up to 2 years as a temporary resident and are prepared to pay higher visa application fees for faster processing.

Visa that suits you: Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (subclass 173)

To apply for this visa, a parent must meet the balance of family test, health and character requirements, and have a sponsor.

Applying from Either Inside or Outside of Australia

Scenario 3: You are applying from either inside or outside of Australia, your child lives in Australia, want to become a permanent resident in Australia, and are prepared to pay a higher visa application fees for faster processing.

Visa that suits you: Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143)

To apply for this visa, a parent must meet the balance of family test, health and character requirements, and have an support assurance and a sponsor. If you hold the Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143) and you would like to stay permanently in Australia, then you can apply for the Permanent Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143) before your temporary visa expires.

Applying in Australia

Scenario 4: You are applying inside Australia, your child lives in Australia, want to become a permanent resident of Australia, and meet the age requirements.

Visa that suits you: Aged Parent Visa (subclass 804)

To apply for this visa, you must meet the age requirements, the balance of family test, and health and character requirements, and have a sponsor.

Scenario 5: You are applying in Australia, have a child who lives in Australia, want to live in Australia as a temporary resident for up to 2 years, meet the age requirements, and are prepared to pay higher visa application charges for faster processing.

Visa that suits you: Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Visa (subclass 884)

To apply for this visa, a parent must meet the balance of family test and age requirements, and have a sponsor.

Scenario 6: You are applying in Australia, have a child who lives in Australia, want to become a permanent resident of Australia, meet the age requirements, and are prepared to pay higher visa application charges.

Visa that suits you: Contributory Aged Parent Visa (subclass 864)

To apply for this visa, a parent must meet the health, character and age requirements, pass the balance of family test, and have a support assurance along with a sponsor.
