Visa Options for Relatives

When Do You Need a Relative Visa?

You will need a relative visa if you want to move to Australia and live there permanently because either you are aged and financially dependent on a relative who lives there, OR you and your partner’s only remaining relatives live there and you want to be close to them.

Are You Eligible for a Relative Visa?

You may be eligible if you are related to someone who is a citizen of Australia, a permanent resident of Australia or someone who is eligible for the citizenship of New Zealand. The person you are related to must be of 18 years or older in age.

You Will Need to Have a Sponsor

You will need to have a sponsor if you are planning on applying for a relative visa. The sponsor or their partner must be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen. They must be of 18 years or older, related to the visa applicant, and lawfully residing in Australia since a reasonable period of time.

Need for Support Assurance

In order to apply for a relative visa, you will need to provide an support assurance.

Which Visa is Right for You?

Applying from outside of Australia

Scenario 1: You are applying from outside of Australia, are dependent on a relative who lives in Australia for financial support, want to travel to and live permanently in Australia, and your age is equivalent to that of the Australian pension age.

Visa that suits you: Aged Dependent Relative Visa (subclass 114)

To be eligible for this visa, you must be sponsored by a relative or their partner who lives in Australia, not be married or in a de fact relationship, meet dependency, age, health and character requirements,  and have an support assurance.

Your family members may also be eligible for this visa.

Scenario 2: You are applying from outside of Australia, want to live in Australia to be near to your relatives, do not have any other relatives living anywhere else in the world, and want to become an Australian permanent resident.

Visa that suits you: Remaining Relative Visa (subclass 115).

To apply for this visa, you must have your only close relatives living in Australia, be sponsored by an eligible close relative or their partner, have an support assurance, and meet health and character requirements.

Your family members may also be eligible for this visa.

Applying from within Australia

Scenario 3: You are applying in Australia, depend on a relative who lives in Australia, want to become a permanent resident, and are of the equivalent age for Australian pension.

Visa that suits you: Aged Dependent Relative Visa (subclass 838)

To be eligible for this visa, you must be sponsored by a relative or their partner who are Australian residents, not be married or in a de facto relationship, meet dependency, age, health, and character requirements, and have a support assurance.

Your family members may also be eligible for this visa.

Scenario 4: You are applying in Australia, want to live in Australia to be close to your near relatives, do not have any other near relatives living anywhere else in the world, and want to become an Australian permanent resident.

Visa that suits you: Remaining Relative Visa (subclass 835)

To apply for this visa, you must have your only near relatives living in Australia, be sponsored by an eligible near relative or their partner who lives in Australia, have an support assurance, and meet health and character requirements.

Your family members may also be eligible for this visa.
